JOB OPENING - Specialized Accessibility Instructors

Location: Harambec Freedom School Summer Camp - Montreal

Dates: July 27 to August 16 (3 weeks)

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Job Description:

The Harambec Freedom School Summer Camp is seeking a special needs educator to support neurodivergent youth (ASD, ADHD, and related conditions) as part of its three-week summer program.

Under the supervision of the camp coordinators, the person in this position provides direct support to youth with significant support needs, in line with the camp’s participation objectives.

The educator serves as a point of contact for implementing individualized intervention strategies and actively contributes to the cohesion of the staff teams.

Responsibilities:

Support young people during camp activities

Intervene in situations of disorganization, crisis, or sensory overload using recognized approaches (e.g., de-escalation, positive reinforcement)

Support camp counselors in adapting activities to the young people’s abilities

Tailor interventions to individual needs

Ensure a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment

Collaborate with the coordination team to ensure continuity in interventions and daily follow-ups

Participate in team meetings and intervention adjustments

Qualifications:

DEC in Special Education or a related field (social work, psychoeducation, etc.)

Bilingual (English and French)

Experience working with neurodivergent individuals or those with ASD (required or strongly preferred)

Knowledge of behavioral and developmental intervention approaches (e.g., communication support, emotional regulation)

Ability to respond to crises with calmness and clinical judgment

Independence, thoroughness, and keen observation skills

Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team

First aid training (an asset)

We are a non-mixed organization that is actively decolonial and anti-prison. This camp is reserved for Black youth. The ideal candidate would also identify as Black. However, we welcome any applicant who also has a deep understanding and awareness of issues related to anti-Black racism.

Compensation: A budget has been allocated for this position. Compensation will be discussed openly to align with the candidate’s profile, experience, and market rates. This is the first time we have needed someone with this profile, and we are learning what this entails for the camp’s resources.
